So many vampire-killing metaphors to choose from, here: The sun will rise on What We Do In the Shadows? The series has gotten a stake through the heart? However you want to phrase it, the truth remains: Vulture has confirmed that the beloved vampiric mockumentary has one more season to run (fly/flap/vamp) before it goes to its grave forever.
What We Do In the Shadows was spun off from the 2014 movie of the same name, which followed a gaggle of vampires (including co-writers and directors Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi) just trying to live their undead lives in New Zealand. For the series (created by Clement and executive produced by Waititi), the action shifted to happening Staten Island, with a a whole new set of characters. Vampire housemates Laszlo (Matt Berry), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), Nandor (Kayvan Novak) and Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch), along with Guillermo (Harvey Guillén), Nandor’s human familiar, and the Guide (Kristen Schaal).
Over its run, What We Do In the Shadows has earned 21 Emmy nominations, but only won a single award, for Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes in 2022.
The show’s fifth season ended in August. There’s no word yet on when the vampires will make their final bow, but while you wait, the five existing seasons are streaming on Hulu.
